The chiropractic profession takes care of reversible functional troubles of the locomotor apparatus, more specifically of the spine, the nervous system, muscles, tendons and articulations, following accident and overwork, either on a long or short basis. Prejudice to motion and resulting muscle spasm, together with resulting painful states are either diminished or eliminated by the chiropractor.
As for any medical practice, in-depth examination focusing on posture and motion, together with history will be followed by treatment. Besides orthopedic and neurological examination, the chiropractor has mainly the "palpation tool" at his disposition, giving him an appreciation of the physical qualities of an organ, a region; more precisely the vertebral column, pelvis and peripheral articulations together with the control of their functions. Radiographic and laboratory procedures will confirm the diagnosis and might, as an example, conclude to the presence of a tumor or fracture which then would not be an indication to manual therapy.
The chiropractic adjustment essentially consists of a minimal force effect on an articulation which is disturbed in its function. Correctly done, this adjustment is not only painless, but also without risk. Numerous studies show that chiropractic treatment is able to considerably reduce the need for daily medication, which might have secondary effects.
Chiropractic is actually taught all over the western world at a university level, with its usual requirements. Among others, it consists of courses in anatomy, physiology, neurology, pathology, biomecanics, diagnosis, radiology and of course, the inherent to chiropractic, manual activity. Postgraduate mandatory continuous training is the general rule.
Of greek origin, the term "chiropratic" is made of two words meaning "hand" and "to do or accomplish". From the classical antique period, aches and pains related to the spine were treated with manipulations of the spine and pelvis.
At the end of the nineteenth century, the Palmers, son and father, recognized the importance of the chiropractic tools as a procedure able to make reversible functional troubles of the spine disappear. They improved this procedure to create an efficient therapy for many pains and evolving diseases. The first college teaching chiropractic, "Palmer College of Chiropractic", was founded around 1900 in Davenport Iowa. It is still today one of the leading teaching colleges in the chiropractic field.
